Default Best B-Day Present

Just had a fantastic day on Sunday driving some of the best sports cars on the planet. My wife signed me up for a driving event http://www.wcdriving.com/start.php as a birthday present.

This has got to be IMO the deal of the century if you are into fast cars. I got to drive the following new cars:

Ferrari F430 (0-60 mph in 3.9 sec; V-8 490 HP)
Lamborghini Gallardo (V-10, 500 HP)
Aston Martin DB9 Volante (Conv)(V-12 450 HP)
Ford GT (0-60 mph in 3.4 sec.)
Bentley GT (12 cylinder twin tubo 552 hp)
Corvette Z06

The deal is you get to drive each car for a minimum of 30 minutes out in the country on public roads. The route they selected for my event included some great two lane twisties and also about 5 miles on the interstate. You can pretty much drive these cars as hard as you want. They don't want you weaving in and out of traffic, doing smokey burnouts or doing any side-by-side racing, but you can drive them pretty hard. I was doing full-out blasts through the gears at 8,000 rpm in some of the cars. On one drive, I blasted up to 145 mph in the Ferrari as my friend was hot on my tail in the Lambo. It was an incredible day. Probably the best pulling car was the Ford GT, but the Ferrari was everyone's clear favorite overall. The Z06 was impressive, but nothing topped the Ferrari.

The Z06 and the Ford GT were sticks and the other cars automatics. The Ferrari and the Lamborghini had the F1 paddle shifters and it was my first experience driving with this type of trans. They are technically manual transmissions that are shifted from stalks on either side of the steering wheel. The computer works the clutch and it shifts in 40 milliseconds. It is quite a system.

I know they aren't old muscle cars, but they are all mighty impressive. The event is going around the country and I would strongly encourage anyone who enjoys fast cars to go. It ranks up there as one of the best car days I've experienced and for $800 is an incredible bargain for all the seat time you get compared to some of the other driving events available. Of course you have to pay your own speeding ticket in the event you are unfortunate enough to get one.
