Default Buick GSX

I found a Buick GSX ? yesterday. Under the vin tag there is another tag that reads, Kenne Bell, COPO Super Stock. What is this car? The kid that has this car now traded a dirt bike for the car. I wish that I had his luck. It has a 455 Buick engine in it right now. The prior owner says that it has Stage 1 heads on it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Monte

One thing you can do is look for a couple of things you should see on a 455 Stage 1 motor. Chrome valve covers and a Stage 1 sticker on the air-cleaner. Yes they could have been changed through the years, but I would start with those. The Vin # won't tell you if it was a factory Stage 1 X car. Check for documentation (Buildsheet or order sheet). There is a gentlemen who has all records on 70 GSX cars. They way they came from the factory. If you would like this info, PM me and I'll share it with you. The contact is a guy by the name of Wayne Roberts.

In addition. I wouldn't mind owning another GSX. If you end up with the car, or help the gentlemen sell it, put me in line, I would be interested. Patrick

Not all GSX's are Stage One cars. Both 4 speed and auto non Stage Ones were produced. Also, the Sloan Museum has info similar to PHS docs on some of the Stage One cars.

True, not all GSX cars are Stage 1 cars. 400 of the 678 built in 70 were stage 1 cars. The two things that first stand-out are the Chrome valve covers on the Stage cars. Red on the non-stage cars. And the air-cleaner.

Sloan doesn't have documentation for 70 Buicks. Wayne Roberts owns the documentation. I can tell from experiance when checking on my car.

What color is the car. Apollo White or Saturn Yellow?

I'm probably a little biased, but I believe Buicks as a whole are grossly undervalued. The GSX cars should be compared favorably with LS6 and Hemi cars. There are a few resources that will help determine the authenticity of the car. Take a look at www.v8buick.com

In 1970 ther were only two colors available on the GSX: Saturn Yellow and Apollo White. Take a look at the trim tag. Good luck.

I wouldn't get sooooo excited just yet.... why would you remove the VIN tag in the first place? KB never campaigned a GSX, nor did Buick make COPO cars. I would have to see a documented pic of this, something is just not right. Iv'e been around these GS cars for 35 years now, and this COPO news is a first...

As soon as I can get back into town to talk to this guy I will get digi-pics and post them here on this site so that we can ALL be flustered and stumped. There is almost nothing left of the original drive train left in the car . I am sure that it has all been changed out. I did notice that the valve covers were magnesium and had the word "Buick" cast into them. There was no air cleaner and there was a TEN bolt rear end in the car.Probably just the basic carcass is all that is left of the original car. Monte

I don't know when you last priced a Stage 1 GSX. I have mine being rotisserie restored with a top Buick restorer. He has been involved with private sales with his clients recently and the prices on the best cars are way up there. 2 have sold well north of 200K recently. Both 4-speed non-air cars. The automatics are pushing 200K. These are the best GSX's out there. Certainly in a class by themselves compared to other X cars.

On Ebay last month one hit 186K and the bidders were real bidders. There was alot of discussion on the V8Buick board while the auction when on.

There not as expensive as the Hemi E-bodies, but boy their gaining!
