I recently had a topic come up for discussion concerning Spare Tires and wanted to see if anyone here could shed some insight. I will not say what I feel is the correct answer.. just want to see what others say.
Would a Factory spare Tire have a STICKER on the tire? We see so many spares in the trunks of fully restored cars and the sticker on the threads is left on for a more AUTHENTIC LOOK... but would that have been the case in reality.. would your original NEW 66 or 67 or any year car for that matter have had that sticker on the spare from the assembly plant?? Thoughts/Comments welcome Mike |

Mike,
From my experience, I only have seen original spares with painted on tire codes and stripes matching the build sheet. I have never seen one with a sticker. However, if you replaced the spare for any reason at the dealership the day you bought the car, I believe you would get a tire with the sticker.

Mike,
I have one a owner '69 Nova and '70 Chevelle, both with their original spares in place. No stickers on either one. Same with the '68 Corvette I had; original spare but no sticker. Dennis

When I got a new set of 5 repos for my car last year I did not leave the sticker on the spare. My memory seemed to be that they were not on them for the new cars I owned in the 60's and 70's. I did however get information from a fellow member on here about markings on his "untouched" spare for a very similar car to mine (you out there Tony
![]() You see the stickers all the time. People also on occasion ask me "Where's the sticker on your apare tire?". I don't worry about it one way or the other if it's correct, just my preference.

I can't speak for all vehicles or all plants back then, but from my experience,I have never seen an adhesive Tire tread decal on any Assembly line mounted tire.
Spare or axle mounted. Most likely they were removed once they were assembled onto the rims, after they were static balanced, and a tread stencil was applied for specific model application callout.I have a very good 1967 16mm movie showing the entire Goodyear Tire plant process in sequence. Tread Labels were applied for retailers purpose I believe. ![]() |

Personally, I would bet there was no "removing" of the labels at all... The tire companies were making large batches (orders) of tires specifically for factory assembly line purposes, and therefore wouldn't have even bothered putting the stickers on them, as I agree these labels were made for tires to go to retail outlets, tire shops, etc. I also talked to some guys who work at a dealership doing new car check-in's for some 20+ years, and they said they have never seen a car come off the transporter with any stickers on the tires, and I doubt there was anyone at the factory in charge of picking the stickers off the treads of new tires as they mounted them.

This is the original spare from my unrestored 70 Z28 as you can see it has the JBDL stamp which is what is in the Spare box on the build sheet. Oh Ya still has original air also!!!!

My 69 Chevelle has the original spare. No sticker. Some hand written stuff though.
