Default M22 clacking sound in reverse gear

I've got an original M22 transmission in my Chevelle. When the car is cold and I shift into reverse and then back out of my garage, there is a clacking sound coming from underneath the front of the car (like a metal flapper). As soon as I stop, it goes away. It does not do this in 1st gear or when the car is warm. I'm not positive it's the transmission but that's when the problem arises. Any ideas? Help!

Jim,

Check your forward U-joint. (Actually, while you're under there, check them both!)

Typically, when they start to go, you get clunking noises when shifting from reverse to forward gears (and vice versa). The sudden change in direction puts a lot of stress on the U-joints and it's very possible this is the problem.

Jim,

Well, you really did it!!! You jinxed MY car!

I got in it yesterday to go to the store, and when I backed out of the garage... "Clunk clunk"!!

I put the car on jack stands and removed the drive shaft. The rear U-joint literally fell apart in my hands! One side had deteriorated so bad that the needle bearings were DUST!

After $14 bones at the local auto parts store, and about an hours worth of work, I was back on the road again.

Do me a favor, if your engine falls out, keep it to yourself!!!
