Found a great new book at Barnes&Noble.
Entitled-"Super Stock-Drag Racing the family sedan" by Larry Davis. A nice 210 page hard cover book covering the super stock , stock and early AF/X cars. Absolute great pictures-most of which I have never seen. Has a lot of Jenkins,Strickler, Harrell, early 409s. Nice text coverage also. |

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to check it out. The '62-'67 Super Stock - A/FX era is probably my favorite period in factory hot rods and drag racing.

Just got my copy of the book. WOW. I haven't even started reading and I can already tell its going to be one of my favorites (and I have hundreds of car books). Its worth it just for the pictures, the detailed accurate text is just a bonus. A/FX, Thunderbolts, Z-11's all the way through big block Camaros circa '68/'69. You can find it cheapest at amazon.com, a little more at barnesandnoble.com. Or a full 40 bucks at the store. Get it! You won't be disappointed if you like that era of cars and drag racing.

What a good book!! Even has two of the three '63 Nova Fastbacks built by Bill Thomas. Good stuff on Dick Harrell and the Grump.

The book is very good on the early Super Stock Cars and is well worth reading in my opinion. The text only appears to go up to 1968 but he used some pictures into the early 70s. He states that Pro Stock started in 1969 but my other books state that the first Pro Stock race was 1970 ? It was won by Grumpy in his 1968 Camaro with a Alu 427. One thing I thought was funny is the telegram from Chrysler telling all factory A/FX teams to "refrain from doing wheel stands"

I have been reading that book and it is GREAT! The author had some cooperation from Susie Stricker(Dave Strickler's widow, Ammon R. Smith's granddaughter, both of Old Reliable fame) and is friends with Larry Brinkley (Larry owns one of Strickler's '62 Bubbletops). I highly recommend this book. Look for the picture of Strickler's B/FX Impala. I have never seen another photo of it.

The book is awsome. Great color pictures of all the various styles of wheels used during the era.
Check out the Chevelle on page 136 for a view of the original style E T brand wheels. The style looks just like the ones they produce today. |
