I've always spread the carpet out on a warm sunny day and let the heat from that warm and soften the carpet. It will take on the pressed shape it was made in and lay much better on the floor for install. I then let it sit in the car for a day or 2 to settle before fitting. You'll still have to smooth out and pull on certain areas and a heat gun may help with that inside the car.

I use a steamer and it works great. Carpet is glued to the backing with latex so steaming it softens that ever so slightly and allows it to conform really well.

Recently while watching an Oregon Mopar restoration co TV / Internet show, they mentioned ECS was able to supply ACC (?) Carpet shipped FLAT in large boxes and this allowed for much quicker and less trouble with installation from the practice of rolled-boxed storage and shipping. I sure found that interesting.
