I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 4WD that needs new tires. Was thinking about buying a set of new takeoff 2016 Silverado 18" wheels and tires rather than messing with the factory 16" wheels. From what I can tell the 6-lug bolt pattern is identical, but I'm not sure about the backspacing. Has anyone attempted this swap?
Thanks! |

I am not sure, but I am under the belief that there may have been a change in the bolt pattern on the newer trucks. I do not know when the change occurred.

![]() ... If they do fit ....make sure the overall height of the tire is the same as the originals. ... I had a friend that has a 2004 Silverado and he went from the stock size aluminum rim and tire ... to a 20" rim and tire and we noticed on a trip that the truck ran at a lower rpm on the highway ... and would downshift on small inclines and cause the transmission to shift more often. ... and later he ended up having the transmission rebuilt. ... I try to stay with the factory height of my tires .... if I change wheels. |

The lug pattern is the same on the 1500 4WD trucks. The newer trucks have larger calipers which require the 17, 18 or 20" wheels and the older ones can run the 16" wheels. If you go with taller tires, you can get a Diablosport tuner to change the tire size and make the speedo correct and the transmission will be fine. I have 35" tires on my 2009. I went with 17 x 8 wheels with the stock backspacing to keep them from sticking out.

I'd suggest you make sure you look into Hub-Centric rims for any GMC/Chev wheel changes. On my 09 Duramax, I went to an aftermarket aluminum rim and chased bad high speed vibrations for years. I went as far as adding hub-centric rings to help center the newer wheels, balanced them 6 ways to Sunday, and still had issues until I finally put the old wheels back on when I sold that truck.
I now have a 2015 GMC 2500 series. I have installed aftermarket wheels and a mild lift on this one but made sure the wheel I chose this time around was Hub-Centric in design. I still get a small vibration between 60-65mph but typically drive through that each time as I normally drive at 70mph plus on the highways. Ask the tire and wheel tech about that at a GM dealership. These are the guys that see all the problems that pop up with wheel changes between truck and wheel manufacturers. There are ones to stay away from.

Good point. My 01 Silverado had aftermarket wheels that came with the rings to help center the wheels. That link provided above shows the Silverado 1500 4wf 6 lug wheels have a 78mm center hub. If you're going with stock GM wheels then you should be in good shape with the hub center but it looks like the newer wheels do have a different offset. I'm not sure what the L vs M/H means with the offset but that's the difference it shows. I searched around for a while to find the specific backspacing and correct center hub when I was looking.
