Does anyone have a NHRA rule book from 1968/1969 that describes the acceptable HP ratings for a 396 engine in a Camaro running in the SS/EA and the SS/HA classes?
Thanks, Joe |

Joe,
I have all the rule books but I don't know the shipping weights of the cars, so you'll have to do the math. The factors for SS/EA were 8.70-9.49 for '68, 7.50-7.99 for '69, and 8.00-8.49 for '70. All that hoping around seems a bit strange to me but that's what the rule books say. Verne |

Verne:
Thanks for the info. Were the factors the same for SS/EA and SS/HA? I am trying to find a needle in the haystack named "Boss Lady". See picture. This is a 1968 SS396 that was raced by Luby Chevrolet in Baltimore late 68, early 69, and maybe part of 1970. My dad worked at Luby's at the time and I spent a lot of time at the dealership, and weekends at the track with him and the car so I have very fond memories. I don't have the VIN so I am trying to reconstruct some of the details. I know the car came with a 396 but I don't know the HP so I am trying to back into that with the engine specs for the SS/EA. Anyway, thanks for the info. Let me know if you have any ideas that I can pursue to find the car. Joe |

I put the rule books away. I"ll check tomorrow. E & H are definitely different factors. Each letter is one step on the ladder. Automatic and Stick are the same index for each level.

In '68, there was no factor for SS/HA. The last factor was F and it was for 9.50 or more. That's what the rule book says anyway. The '69 rule book lists:
F: 8.00-8.49 G: 8.50-8.99 H: 9.00-9.49 The way the numbers jump around,it makes you wonder if they used Weight/CI one year and Weight/HP the other year, but the books don't explain that. Based on those numbers you couldn't run the same class in '68 and '69 with the same car. Since Super Stock is based on Stock classes, I'd think the factor should be based on HP rating because modifications were very limited. Verne |

Thanks Verne. Now I get to ask the stupid question. I am new at this so I want to be sure I am calculating this correctly. Do I divide the weight of the vehicle by the factors to determine the HP range that is acceptable?
