I am wondering if there is any way to differentiate between a L78 and a L34/35 by it's appearance. See picture below.
Any help would be appreciated. ![]()

L78 would have an aluminum intake.

L78 has aluminum intake, square port heads (quickly identified by the height of the intake runners on the head as we as the small half round casting mark at the parting line visible on the face of the head), Holley carb vs Quadrajet, 837 alternator vs 834, different distributor just to name a few. Besides the fact that it is cast iron, you can clearly see the individual intake runners are not as tall as they are on a square port intake.

Also in 69 you have the return line added along side the supply fuel line. So 2 lines for L34, L35 vs single 3/8" for L78. 68 is much much harder to verify.

Thanks
The picture above is from a 68 Camaro but it would seem certain because the intake isn't aluminum that it would be either a L34 or L35 but it would not be a L78.

Agree with all the stuff mentioned, but personally I would first aim for the 3 larger external oil cooler provision holes above the oil filter, denoting 4-bolt mains also used on solid lifter (L78) blocks, not hydraulic.
