Default AC Delco Oil Sender..

This may not be news to some, but it was to me. I needed an oil sender switch, typical factory threaded type with the single blade. They are in all the resto catalogs, but I checked online at Advanced Auto Parts...and to my surprise, they carry a stock AC-Delco replacement...price $9.99.

So, in order to save time, and not suffer thru the experience of today's parts store idiots, I printed out the info from the Advanced website and presented it to the "boy" behind the counter. His first question was...what kind of car is this for.? I said, don't worry about it, just give me that part number and take my money please. He plugged the number into his mother ship device and promptly told me "we don't have that part number" ...I of course pointed out that the info came from their site...didn't matter..no good..we have to start from scratch

and so it begins...year.."1970"..make.."Chevy "...model.."Nova"..engine..."4 02"...he looks up at me and says...what's a 402 ? ...we finally get to the finish line and there it is on the screen, big as life..of course, he was amazed and then tells me.."we don't have it in stock"...but, we have this other one, it's the same thing so, he brings it out and it's close, but no cigar! I ask the genius.."can you order one for me"..he nods and says yes, but then asks why would you want to spend $1.75 more when you can have this one that's almost the same.?? I won't print my response to him here, out of respect for mankind and the sensitive hearts on the forum. Well, now it's time to take my money (mind you this about 1/2 hour of time investment at this point)..I hand him my credit card, along with a can of spray paint and said let's get 'er done...well. the card reader won't process my Amex card...so, the manual input process begins..watching this young man having to key in those 16 digits and security code defies description finally the deal is done..he hands me the receipt and I stumble back to the car, safe in the knowledge that our country is secure in it's future with so many bright young minds there to lead us

By, the way...the part came in today..it was as orderd..and is a dead nuts match for the original...thank god

Wilma

I fell your pain, been there done that. Did the same thing with a 12 bolt gasket, supplied the PN#, to save time... ...No can do says counter person, so we do the "what car game ????"
So I lied and said it was for a 69 Chevelle and in fact it was for a 69 Camaro. Well low and behold the parts person now informs me that we do have that #. I am pretty sure there system will not allow the input of just a PN. ?
I am so glad I grew up in a time that worked and made some sense.
Thanks for the rant...

Its a shame it is like a lost art, walking into a part store and most the time the parts guy knew exactly what the part number of the part you wanted was, if he didnt know, it was something to see him surf the his rack of parts books. He could usually find the part looking thru all them books faster than theese guys with their computers.

I have one! I called a Napa store and asked if they stocked a voltage regulator for a 68 Nova. Hold Please.......... then the guy said sorry we can't get that you will need to go to a junk yard. I just started laughing.

That is why I deal with a mom and pop parts store not these chain stores. Two brothers run the parts store. They are not that old grew up turning wrenches and will go out of there way to help you. Another lost cause someone that trys to help you and knows what you are talking about.

I do worry about the future of my kids the are 9 and 12. It's real scary!

I just got a replacement AC Delco 515 voltage regulator from Advance regular price was aroung $82 and I ordered it online from Advance and got 20% discount. GM parts direct was I think $62 or $68. I called my local GM dealer, and they wanted $112, I told them I could get it at advance for $68 and they said they must be from Taiwan, and I told them it was AC Delco and then he said he would sell it to me for $85.
