Default 69 Z28 Rear Axle

Im working on a friends 69Z and noticed that the rear axle on one side has a casting or part number on the exposed end of the axle. The other axle has no casting numbers on it. The number is 9349 LS

My question is, do the 69 axles have casting numbers and if not, would one of the axles be a replacement?

Appreciate any advise on what is correct etc -

My JL8 car has 7206 (if memory serves), which were the last four digits of a JL8 axle part number, cast in the area you are referring to. I thought it was on both axles but haven't looked in a while.

Yes, Ed they have a casted part # on the ends of the axle.

OK, from what i have been able to check out so far - the part number for the axle is 3969349 - so the axle would have a cast number of 9349 like the one im looking at. The other side does not have any casting info - so i am assuming its been replaced with a generic brand.

Any idea what the casting letters LS mean?

Ed,

Both of my JL8 axles have 7206 on the end (part # 3947206). I have a few other GM axles laying around and they all have numbers on the end. My guess is the one without numbers would be a replacement.

The LS means "left Side" and should only be used on the left side unless you live below the Equator. In that case you will need to move it to the right side or your gas mileage will severely drop. It's just like the direction water swirls in a toilet. It changes depending weather you are above or below the Equator because of the magnetic pull of the North and south poles. If you have the axle on the wrong side it will be just like trying to swim against the swirl in that toilet. Go with the flow. Ta Daaaa..

What happens if you have one wheel north of the equator and the other south of the equator.....that would be a CF!
