Hi Guys,
Looked at an LA '69 Z28 today. 11A build, 52B paint, 712 interior. Motor is stamped V1028DZ (Flint, October, 28, 68). There is one week's time between the motor build date and the car's build date. I'm rusty with Cali Z28s but I find it hard to believe the motor went from Michigan to CA in one week to be mated with the car. I also have my doubts on the pad. What are your thoughts? Any help would be great. Thanks, Dan ![]() ![]()

Looks OK to me, both datewise and stamp.
I think I know the car, email me the VIN or post the VIN and I may be able to help.

Correct me if I'm wrong but those don't appear to be the correct 186 heads that all Z28's had.
They probably didn't start production on the car until the engine was at the plant in CA so the dates seem very possible to me.

They're not the correct heads. Good eye Randy! They're painted aluminum heads.
Is pad surface a concern? The motor has been decked and the broach marks are not really present. Character font looks fine despite not seeing many broach marks. Does this detract from resale? The car is for a friend. Thanks for the information guys! Much appreciated. Dan

The numbers would be gone if the block was decked so if the block has in fact been decked, it must have been re stamped???

Did Van Nuys stamp the VIN near the oil filter pad?

Van Nuys stamped the VIN on the top pad at least until the end of February. I just picked up a DZ block from an LA car that was assembled Feb. 12th and it has the VIN on the top pad. I would say the car in question was probably built November of 1969 rather than 1968. He will need to check the VIN of the car to verify.
