Default Need an opinion

Got a friend looking at a 70 Chevelle L34 for a fairly strong price (advertised as 'born with' engine). The casting date of the block is exactly two months before the pad assembly date (Nov 19/69 - Jan 19/70). This is an Atlanta car.

I know in some cases such a time frame would not be beyond the realm of possibility. However, 1970 L34 Chevelles were being built in huge numbers at that time of year. Could this type of engine sat around for that long?

What do you think? Appreciate it.

I've asked him to get a picture of the pad stamping if possible. I am not knowledgeable enough on stampings so I may be back here with it if I get it.

Completely possible and not really that unusual.
Although not typical,I've seen some casted as much as 6-8 months prior.

No problem on that time frame. Sixty days is well in line.
These blocks were not on a first in, first out basis.
Don't let that steer you away.

EXACTLY. It was the same in all auto manufacturing plants back in the day. There was no consideration for stock rotation until the end of the model year just before change over. The rest of the year they would just stick new stock in front of old stock in the racks. You can find examples of late model year cars with very early model year cast engines. It is not necessarily the norm but it is not all that rare.

I know that when the very first NCRS judging manuals came out back in the mid 70s that they allowed engine casting dates of up to 6 months prior to the assembly date of the car due to this.
