Hello,
I just purchased an original set of unissued 1970 TX plates for my Chevelle. They are in unreal condition except for the yellow tint that is on them. They are suppose to be an off white, but now have a yellowish tint to them. The guy that I bought them from told me to leave them out in the son for several days. That has not worked. I tried cleaning with dishwasher soap also. Does anyone know how to get this off? Thanks for the help!

I heard the same thing also and it did not work for me either. I have a few sets of never installed personalized "YENKO" Texas tags from the late 70's that were for YS-070 that are either completely yellowed or partially.
I wish I could help.

Problem is you guys were using the TX sun. Now things may have a different outcome if you use an AZ (Supercharged, solid lifter) sun!

I have not tried compound or any harsh cleaners yet. But that may be my next step. There has to something out there to take this off.

I think the yellowing is caused by the aging of the clear on the plates?
Try some mild rubbing compound in a small area...

Hit it with some clay, then some mild polish. If the backside has color, make sure you're not removing paint. Also, any product with excessive silicone is not ideal for lacquer. 3M Hand Glaze should work...

Personally, I would think of the yellowing as 'patina' and leave them alone.
