I am trying to figure out how to copo's that are one digit off with there vin #'s can be 5008 apart with there body #'s......

COPOs were generally built in batches when the components were ready. The NOR number is the number assigned when the dealer's order was accepted, it doesn't specifically go with the VIN when was built. Often the orders would sit and wait until enough more orders were made to fill a batch run of 50 or so. So in this situation the order was accepted but the cars were not built until more orders for a COPO were made and that was 5000 cars later. This is a rough idea of what CRG has researched and found out. I'm sure someone will correct any mistakes I made but it gives you a rough idea.

Any reason why the base 300 Deluxes (which in '69 for the 1st & only time were allowed to have the 396 motor option) were not the platform of choice for COPO Chevelles? Talk about a sleeper!

The 300 Deluxe SS was just a stripper to compete pricewise with the Roadrunner. You didn't really save all that much money over a Malibu SS. With ours, the stripes on the seats are the first things to catch people's eyes. They were the cheapest go fast Chevelle that Chevy had until the COPO cars came along.

The COPO's were built in batches. Vin's were assigned as the orders came in. The body #'s were designated as they were put in order to be built. If you notice, most body's #'s to a certain dealer or area are sequential. When they got to the end of the line, there would be a batch ready to go to the certain dealer or zone, so they did not get a back log of cars waiting to go to all different parts of the country.

Peter [/ QUOTE ] Hey Pete it was nice to meet you and your family at SC8....A friends car that was sold out of Frost Chevrolet(body # 298357) and my car that is out of Funston Chevrolet(body# 293349) are one vin# off from each other but 5008 apart with there body numbers. Is there a chance that your white car could have been in the same batch?? |

Both our cars were sold out of Funston and the body #'s are 6 apart. At the end of the day, both our cars would be ready to load on the same truck and not be sitting around taking up space.
