Default Need help decoding 4-bbl Q-Jet carb Mfg. by Carter

I'm having some serious problems trying to decode a 1960's
4-bbl. Quadrajet carburetor that was Manufactured by Carter Carburetor. I had read that Rochester had Carter build some Q-Jet's for them in the 1960's and was thinking this could possibly be one of them. It has a Carter ID# in place of where the Rochester ID# is normally located on the side of the bowl. The number given is: 6170S with D2 stamped below. The carburetor was mounted on an intake that decoded to 1967 Camaro 350, but I have no idea if the carb. was mounted on this intake since day "1". I've already tried several local auto parts stores and carb. rebuild shops, but to no avail. Any help would very much be appreciated!
Thanks, Tim

hotrodchev, that number does not look correct for the 65-up Carter built Q-jets. It should be a 7 digit number on the circular tag riveted to the side of the float bowl. The D2 looks to be the build date which could be 1972, 82, 92, or 2002. This could be a remanufactured carburetor as I have seen some without the normal Q-jet numbering system..............RatPack....................... .

Hi Rat Pack, thanks for the reply. I did find some more information tonight that suggests that the "D" = month of April and the "2" = 1972, 1982, 1992 etc. But, I'm still baffled as to why nobody can seem to locate the "6170S" code in their books to order me up a new rebuild kit. Attached is a pic of the carb. in question.

Got out old 1975 Carter catalog for this one. 6170s is a service replacement # carb to replace Q-jets on 65-67 Chevrolets, Chevelles, and Camaros w/396",427", all transmissions. Carter started using the 6000 series numbering in 1971, so the D2 is most likely April 72. All the Carter OE carbs I have seen that were built for assembly line installation used the same numbering as a Rochester built carb, except the first two #'s (70) weren't stamped on the pad, indicating a Carter built carb. They also had the Carter logo, not the Rochester logo. Can't find my Carter kit book, but they used the same kits as the Rochester built carbs. This will take some "eyeball" matching up, since the float design/pivot length changed in middle of 1967. There were also changes to needle and seat at the same time. Look at the difference in the floats and needle and seat, then go with a kit to match the float/ needle&seat combination. LOL
