I was speaking to an older fella today who I know and lives locally that was telling me about his 68 Chevelle SS 396/375 HP car that he had purchased brand new in 68 and recently sold about 2-3 years ago.. He states the car was an original L89 aluminum head car that he was fortunate enough to grab from the dealer when the car came in..
The car was bought new from Edgewater Chevrolet in Cleveland, Oh. He stated it was red with the black body stripe kit, black bucket seat interior, 4 speed and roll tach in the dash.. He stated after the car was purchased he yanked the 396, put it away in the garage and installed a period correct 427 motor.. When he sold the car he stated he put the 396 back in it and kept the 427.. The car supposedly had very low mileage and a repaint.. He stated he had all the paperwork for the car.. The car was sold to a muscle car broker in the Ft. Lauderdale Florida area but he could not remember the name of the dealer.. He told me that he has a bunch of photographs of the car when it was new including the engine compartment. He is going to dig out the pictures for me and I will copy and post them here... I told him he had a pretty rare car if it was a true L89 car and he swears it was.... He alleges the aluminum heads were a factory install... I can't wait to see the old photographs of this car.. Rich

Sounds cool, hope it's true!.
Does had the original paperwork etc mean still has or it went w/ the car?. And if he kept the 427, does he still have it and what is it? ~ Pete

Pete, I think he gave away the paperwork w/the sale of the car... The 427 is on an engine stand in his garage.. He is thinking of putting it in a 56 Chevy Hot Rod he has... He could not remember what the 427 came out of.. First thing I asked, was it from a COPO Car??? He was sure that it WAS NOT....

Rich, thats not the 1st time I've heard of a 68 Chevelle L-89. There's a guy in the Maryland Chevelle club who bought one new too. I believe there was a story on the car in the former NCOA magazine.

I seem to remember a red 68' L89, one that was always being flipped at all the auctions a while back
But then again I did not pay all that much attention to it. Dan

There was a Black/Red Stripe '68 L89 (Chevelle)sold new at a dealership about 15 miles from me. I remember the car VERY WELL! I had a '68 at the time and always drooled over the Black one. I have contacted the dealership a number of times trying to get my hands on ANY paper trail to that car. No luck!
I've even tried to contact the original owner a couple of times, but again, ..... no luck SO FAR. I have his phone number but I can never get anyone to answer the phone or return my messages.
