Can anyone help me figure out which Air Cleaner my 1965 L78 Belair is supposed to have? Is it the same as the 1966 427 one? Is it the same as the 1965 Z16 but with a black lid? Are there numbers on it anywhere?
THANK YOU! |

I believe it is supposed to look like this but have a 396 decal instead of the 427 one:

I think the two used the same....Air cleaner #6421970 was used on the assembly line for both of those years solid lifter Impala engines, when they were equipped WITHOUT the level ride option.
A few years later, they issued a service air cleaner #6484415,which has some slight diffferences to it. |

From the digging around I've done over the years, the '65 L78 air cleaner was the same as the '66 L72 air cleaner on full size cars for those 2 years. Just the cubic inch decal was different. The 1965 assembly manual showed the same part number #6421970. I have never confirmed the part number for a Z16 car air cleaner. I would suspect it was different because the lid was chrome, but I would also guess that the Z16 base was the same. Of all the air cleaners I've seen, I've only seen one with the "level ride" vacuum fitting. The picture SuperNovaSS posted is correct for a '66 L72 full size car.
