Default Anybody familar with ACCEL electronic distributers

Hi. A buddy jsut gave me this Accel distributer, model number 51100E

I am gonna do a street buildup and would like to use this thing. I like it b/c it is electronic, so I can ditch the crummy points set up , and not use the big HEI rig.

Anybody use one of these before? How do i hook it up? What kind of advance is 'built into' this thing..and on the vac can?

Can I do any service to this, before i put it on the motor?

thx

I would personally go with a Pertronix unit in the
stock distributor, if it's still good.

I don't think the 51100e is available any longer.

chuckle.

Yeah. He is a Ford guy, not even sure how he ended up with this on his parts shelf. He didnt give it to me b/c it is 'junky' or broken. In fact, he has the same set-up on his ford car, so I know he endorses it.

Can you guys tell me why its junk?

I dont have the stock distributer. Just building something for fun from scratch.

GM spent a lot of Time, Money, and Effort developing the "Stock" type distributor..........there's nothing wrong with a point or HEI set-up for a street car........get a GM and just have the curve set for your application, put it in and "Forget" about it.............My $.02......."And" it won't leave you on the side of the Road........LOL

I think it was Casey Marks that said "Pertronix is the devil!"

What's your end goal here? There are lots of options out there...

My thoughts.

HEI dont look period correct - as good as the system is.

Points systems require setting, and dont seem to cut it compared to electronic set ups.

The Accel distrib seems to give me the smaller (non HEI) distrib size, that blends in, and doesnt look so obtrusive. Plus I get the performance and reliability of the electronics.

Plus, it was free.

Now, if some of you are telling me the accel set up is junky, or prone to failure. thats a whole new ball game.
