Default 5.3 upgrades..

This is probably common stuff but I was wondering about some performance upgrades for my 2001 Tahoe with the 5.3 motor. Read an article somewhere about using some better plug wires, different airbox and something else. I have a catback low restriction exhaust on it now. Just like to improve the performance and maybe get some better mileage too. Any suggestions appreciated.

Tom, if you do not mind of course... Maybe we could make a sticky for tow rigs?

Could I also pose question about replacement tires? I have a 2003 Yukon, 87k on the clock, looking to change the tires.
Stocks replacements on all four corners now, but looking for an upgrade.

What exhaust do you have on it?

I upgraded to some 17" "take-off" wheels and tires from a Z pickup. Lots of folks want to put on the bling-bling wheels and the factory stuff ends up in the parts dept. You can get some really good deals if you ask around at diff Chevy dealers. I think it was about $700 for the 4 wheels and tires..brand new!! Will need to get some new rubber in the next 6 months..I do a lot of driving for work and these are starting to get down. The exhaust is a Corsa or Borsa, some name like that. A real GM approved accessory that dealers offer...sounds good!

Get a Westers tune before spending $$ on CIB and exhaust.

Westers [ QUOTE ]
FACT, a customized ECU or PCM with recalibrated performance calibration is the CHEAPEST and usually the ONLY way to increase the performance level of your computer controlled fuel injected gasoline or diesel engine. These "chips" are located in every vehicle's onboard computer system. Whether it's gasoline or diesel--we can turn up the boost, make that transmission shift right, remove speed and rev limiting, while improving fuel economy, and improve overall driveability.

We've spent considerable time developing high mileage calibrations for your GM and Ford car and trucks.[/QUOTE]

May i suggest the first thing i done to my 03 Pick up was "Flash" the computer......The timing from the factory is so retarded it's a wonder it even ran....we changed it by almost 30 degree's....(But you will have to run 93% octane afterward's)Then i installed a cold air intake with a K&N filter & the corvette survo's in the transmission.....And the a flow master muffler (uno)(ONE)(1)I was told you can let it breath to much as well....it need's some back pressure... But at this point everything has worked well and the truck run's wicked for a little 5.3.. Also have the 03 factory SS (20)wheel's & tire's (what's left of them) but they help with hooking up!As soon as i recover from the "Vette".......It will be supercharged "OR" a turbo & some tire's ...Then look out we will have fun "or" we will tare up some S$$$! "Goodluck" with your project"...Dan

Not sure if the 5.3s have it or not, but I know the 6.0L and 8.1L engines have a funky *torque management* program in the computer that really hinders them...seems like you need LS1-edit or something to get rid of it...I was looking into doing it on the wife's Sub...
