Default underhood help

Just a few questions about underhood detailing. Doing my 72 Nova SS. I know you guys are gonna cringe but, it is a "day 2" job. I want to make it look similar to factory but with updated parts (master cyl, lines, wiring, fuel system etc.) and a big block driveline. Should my firewall be body color? Now,the top is black and bottom body color. Steering box color? Should it be cast? It has a return line on the fuel pump but, can I eliminate the return to run a single line pump as long as the charcoal canister is still venting the tank? Thanks for your help!!!

Firewall should be GM black, heater core cover is gloss black, steering box body is cast, I think.....just looked at the original 70 in the garage. You should run a single 3/8" line from the tank to the BB fuel pump. You can change the tank/sending unit to an earlier model that eliminates extra lines, etc. Don't know if having the canister is an emsissions issue or not. Wouldn't think so since you are changing the motor..There are a lot of other mech and systems issues to consider with the BB transplant. Let us know if you need more info.

Thanks! I will replace my sending unit and lines with '68 396 ones and just use a vented '68 cap. Emissions are not a problem as my '72 is exempt in PA. This started as a simple engine change and escalated into a full redo of the entire driveline and underside of the car. Got all the right rad/heat/mounts/springs etc.. new bushings, body mounts, frame connectors, 12 bolt, auburn posi, 3.73's, new leafs, fresh trans, converter ...Not to mention a completely fresh 454 with oval ports, solid cam,new intake, worked 3310... over my head but having a good time.

The vented cap won't fit on the non-vented tank, the lip is a different depth. It might be a good time to put a new tank in anyway - since you will have it down to put in the new sending unit.

Ditto on the gas tank and new lines. Very important for a newly redone carb and fresh engine.
