Default Annie Hartweg asking for help

Annie contacted myself and Dennis Cumby last night and asked us to pass on a couple of things as she has not been able to sign on to her computer since last week. First she wanted to thank all those who expressed concern for her's and other's well beings who live in the Springfield area. Secondly and most importantly she asked for anyones help who was willing to donate. Since last Friday morning after hearing a radio plea asking for volunteers to help feed workers and residents, she has been volunteering at one of several canteens set up by the Salvation Army to help feed and clothe the victims of last weeks tornado.
http://www.tsaspringfield.org

She told me that she never had a clue how bad it was until she got into the thick of things and saw it with her own eyes. At one point she had to ask for directions as she had no clue where she was at since all the landmarks were gone. She stated that at least 50% of Springfields population was effected in some way by the storm damage and most of that percentage lost major portions of their belongings and homes. It was very heart wrenching to hear some of the stories that she told me of people that she had fed since Friday and it has taken a toll on her.

Annie asked me to pass along her request since she cannot to ask anyone who could to donate ANYTHING they are able to. She said even the most basic items are needed such as; UNDERWEAR and DIAPERS!!! toilet paper, water, towels, plastic silverware, baggies, sandwich bags, garbage bags, paper bags, women's personal items, paper towels, plastic cups, blankets, paper plates, canned goods, boxed food items, bedding, clothes, childrens toys such as stuffed animals, tooth paste and toothbrushes, combs, razors, shaving cream, deodorant, dog and cat food, and most of all, money.

Annie stated that in the areas that she has worked in that most people lost everything they owned and are living day to day. Many families are taking only 1 or two meals from her and trying to feed their whole families off of that and are more than appreciative to even get ANY warm food as much of the area is still without power and it has been 28* at night. Annie also stessed that Springfield was only one of several areas that were hit by the tornadoes in several states and asked that everyone also consider contributing and/or to them. She did not have information on those addresses but this is the one for the Springfield donations. Please send any and all donations to; The Salvation Army 530 N. Sixth Street, Springfield, IL, 62702.

Annie asked me to pass on her sincere appreciation for everyone's well wishes and concerns and wanted to thank you in advance for any help you can provide to the people of Springfield and other cities effected by these tornadoes.

Karen and I would be up for sending a "care package" to the address indicated. Might even be able to get some local business contributions from some large vendors. But any $$$ would have to go thru Annie, so we know it gets to those who need it. Any thoughts or ideas.....

Thanks for your offers, I will be sure to pass them onto her. I will also ask her about sending money. Initially she told me that checks payable to the Salvation Army delivered to that address would get there. However, I am sure that if you made the checks out to the SA and sent them direct to Annie she would personally deliver them. I will let you know unless she is able to get online soon. Unfortunately they are now forcasted to get as much as 8" of snow tonight which will greatly hamper their clean up problems. Annie will be doubly busy making more hot food if she can get there.

From my understandings this evening 98% of the population is back on power. She is still having sign on issues so Cumby and I have been her go between. Thanks also to Dennis and his company Pactiv for supplying many cases of zip lock baggies and garbage bags to the Salvation Army.

Many, many heart felt thanks to all of you for your concern and consideration!!!!! I can not tell you how wonderful it feels to have so many people, so many "Big Brothers and Mother Hens", yes, I just called some of you guys "hens" (you know who you are) looking out for me!!!! You guys and gals are the very best and you make me proud! I will also take the liberty of saying thank you from the folks of Springfield. Anything you can do to help will be put to good use. We have families trying to live in homes with no roofs, and if they are lucky, they are simply doing without windows. The temps have been down in the mid to low twenties at night and these people are "sleeping" in their cars at night in an effort to keep their kids warm.

Most of the power, thanks to tremendous efforts, has been restored. However, the homes are, for the most part, destroyed and have no functioning appliances. Many families still need hot meals and water. We are doing our best but any help you can offer will go a long way!

Shamefully, I did not offer to help the first few days. Being out in the country, I had no idea how bad the devastation reached. Then I tried to meet a friend for dinner Thur eve and found it impossible to cross through town. I could not believe what I saw!!! I was turned back and chased away because onlookers and traffic were too much for the police and the work crews to handle. By late Thur night and Fri morn they were finally able to ask for help...the word went out on TV and radio. In one day, 7,000 lbs of non-perishables and almost $8,000 were raised. Many contributions continue to arrive but we could use more. From what I have seen, paper and personal products along with cleaning supplies are the most needed. Seems odd to say but I know of many folks right now who would weep with joy at the site of a package of toilet paper and a box of diapers! Also seems odd to say but I know there are many cats and dogs that have been separated from their families. The animal shelter is doing their best and food is in great need until they can match families and pets back together.

Some of my initial time was spent in the SA kitchen cooking as much food as possible. It was good to be able to help but when I finally had the chance to ride on one of the Canteens, my fantasy world came to an abrupt halt. NONE of the pictures shown by the news stations were able to depict the true horror of what happened Sun Match 12th! My eyes were opened BIG TIME! I have seen and survived hurricanes but their terror just does not compare to what I have seen in the last week. For those of you who know me, you know I am rarely speechless. Tonight, I can not begin to tell you of the devastation. And for once, I am truly speechless.

For those who can help, I would say send hard goods rather than money. As much as I am trying to help, I must admit, I just don't see money being spent properly. Very sad to say but the hard goods such as canned foods, potatoes, fruit, paper products, personal products...something as simple as a razor, batteries, flashlights...think about living in the dark and/or the cold....that is what we need. Things like that are much more needed than money that may or may not go to helping the people who really need it.

Feel free to use the address Mr Nelson provided above, that is the main office for our local Salvation Army. If you are more comfortable sending things to me, I will be more than happy and grateful to deliver them to the SA on a daily basis. 1374 Schleyhahn Rd., Pleasant Plains, IL 62677

Many thanks to ALL of you for your thoughts and concerns. Most appreciation to Mr Cumby and the donations he and his company, PACTIV Corp have made to the recovery efforts. Huge thanks go to Mr. Nelson for spreading the word when I was unable to do so. And many thanks to the Clary family who heard our cry for help and offered more than imaginable.....you are all wonderful people and I am proud to be able to call you my friends!

Thank You and Love to All,
A

Annie again called and asked me to express her sincere appreciation for all that several people and organizations have done. She is still unable to get on-line (and stay there without getting dropped) and personally thank everyone now due to a Norton security issue that is effecting many people, me included.

She is still working the kitchen and canteen every day. Unfortunately, yesterday she drove approximately 20 miles in a blizzard only to get there and find a note that the SA was closed due to inclement weather conditions. How ironic since that is why the SA is needed in the first place and the people still needed hot food. She was NOT happy.

She has received many offers of money and needed items from several people and just wanted everyone to know that she and the people of Springfield appreciate what you and the sYc have done for them. One of those offers completely overwhelmed her as it went way beyond any hopes the people may have had. Just goes to show where people are in a time of need.

From Annie Hartweg, THANK YOU!!!

Many, many thanks to all of you for the donations and assistance. According to the SA Director, it will be months before they recover as the pantry and Thrift Store have been entirely depleted of food and goods. However, thanks to you guys, they are well on their way back to capacity!

If anyone asks, we still need personal care products and any kind of non-perishables. Even if you are spring cleaning a closet and can toss the items in a box and send them, they will be put to good use as many families have lost everything. Again, THANK YOU one and all for your wonderful generosity!

Be Safe,
Ann

Just wanted to take a moment (before my phone line goes down AGAIN) to thank all of those who so kindly helped out with the Springfield, IL disaster recovery. Although cleanup and rebuilding will continue for months to come, your contributions of items and funds were greatly appreciated and helped to make a huge difference in the recovery efforts!!

Please let us not forget our neighbors in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana,Kentucky, Tennessee and those still fighting the losses of hurricane Katrina ...even small gestures make large contributions and can change a persons day and life for the better.

Most importantly, we can not forget our men and women in the armed forces, they make the biggest sacrifices and give more of themselves than all of the rest of us put together. Anything we can do to help make their tour(s) of duty better, and anyway we can say thank you, we should be sure to do.

Once again, my heartfelt thanks to the SYC and all of those who helped. You guys are the best!
