Default Need Help W/ Correct Chevy orange paint

Hello Guys, I am brand new to the Supercar registry. First let me say, this is a very awesome site w/ lots of cool people.
I am in the process of building the original engine for my 1969 L-78 Camaro and need a little advice.

Can any of you restoration guys give me some tips and recommendations on the best Chevrolet orange paint to use?

I have heard that there are several paints on the market that do not match the correct shade of Chevy Orange, as well as, the sheen not being correct (a little too glossy).

Also, Is it best to use a spray gun or can I get the same results from applying straight from the spray can?

I apologize in advance if these are stupid questions but this is my first time through this process.

Thanks to all.

Darrell

Thanks for your reply MosportGreen66.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions of brands that have worked really well?

Thanks for the help.

Actually, Chevy orange paint has a slight reddish brown tint to it. I have an original factory painted bellhousing cover and a set of low mile L89 Aluminum heads with original factory overspray paint. Both pieces match which makes me confident that the color is correct. I had a pint of Omni Urethane paint mixed to match the cover which turned out to be a perfect match.

Heads are shown here:

I will take a few of the cover later.

I used OEM Paints #62-010 and found it to be closer than anything in a spray bomb. A little pricey but I thought it was definitely worth it. Available through Rick's First Gen.

Plasti-Kote for me to. I also used there engine primer. I have a few hundred miles on my car since painting it. Not a problem. Still looks great.

------If you are shooting out of a can, Plasti Kote is a very good choice. If you dont like the gloss hold the can back a ways for the final coat. That way it will be drier and a bit duller as well. I was just talking with John Hinckley about this very subject and he said that Chevrolet had a number of paint suppliers so the color could and did change slightly all the time. As well, I would say that shooting quality paint out of a gun will always be a bit better than a can. Hope this helps........Bill S

Thanks guys for all your help. I will check several of those brands of paint out and see which one I like best.

Darren, I did see the recent thread on you redoing the engine and engine compartment on your 69 Z. It looked pretty awesome.

Thanks again everyone for all the help.
