Default GM re releases the GTO

Off topic..General Motors (Holden ) has announced that the new Monaro Coupe will have a GTO nameplate with an option package consisting of heavy duty brakes and handling to go with the LS1 255 KW (about 340hp)front engine rear wheel drive..
Availble with 6 sp man or 5 sp auto, 2 doors, seating for 5 adults and a functional boot.
The GTO nameplate dosn't mean much down here, so it's interesting GM let it out of the box again.
Got to go...pet Kangaroo just punted the kids pet Koala.....when will they learn to get along

Thank you for the info. I have always been jealous of the cool vehicles that are avail "down under". Up here (in the states) GM markets a car as a Cadillac called the Catera. The Catera is a GM Opel design that has some from end similarities to some of your Holden Utes. The Catera is only avail up here with a 200 hp V6. Does GM market this car in Australia as a Holden? Does it have a V8 down there?

No the catera is not avaiable here. Our commodores which the GTO coupe is based on are in turn based on the opel omega platform. The BIG difference is that ours are engineered for rear wheel drive while the opels are front wheel drive. Ford also sells RWD sedans still with the old 302 Windsors. These now run low 14s and are built with 290hp+ modified engines. Ford and GM are still in the muscle car wars down here and from a buyers point it's great.
GM is making terrific profits everywhere in the world except the states. I think letting all your sedans go front wheel drive was a mistake.
There was talk of bringing the cadillac and corvette to OZ but now that we have a home grown coupe with optional 300kw (Calloway LS1) it will never happen.
Back in the 70's the best engine that GM would give us was from the SS Camaro 350. Now it appears the sky is the limit
