Default Partial VIN ID

I thought I knew what this partial VIN was for, but now I'm not so sure. Any thoughts? It's my spare 396/402. I took it apart this weekend to clean it up, re-gasket it etc. Turns out someone was there before me. Brazed oil pick up, cyl # stamped rods etc.
I thought it was a 300hp Canadian built 71 Chevelle SS396 from the partial, but now I don't know.

T0105CLB (Jan 5, 1971 402)

Thank you. What makes you say it's an Impala versus a Chevelle? I can't see a difference between the two partial vins. Is it where the sequence started?

This is a 71 Chevelle partial VIN from Oshawa.

My mistake. It is a Chevelle engine from Oshawa with a 5xxxxx VIN.

How did the first 3 digits of the VIN work out like that? I know that with Camaros,it is 1 for Chevrolet, the digit of the year, then a letter to denote the car's assembly plant. My example would be my 73 Camaro where the engine numbers would be 13N108600 since it was the 8600th 73 Camaro built in Norwood. Did other year/body styles do it different.

Also the numbers before the CLB. The casting is November or December 19th of 70. The stamp on the pad looks like it could be a Oct 10th assembly date,or a January 5th date with a 1 before it. Would the first 1 denote the year?

Rich, see Rick's decode for the partial VIN - first number denotes GM brand line (1= Chevrolet), then the second is the last digit of the model year (1= 1971).
The assembly stamp is T0105, so assembled at Tonawanda NY on January 5th, 1971.

Cast is Dec 19, 70. Like Tim wrote, assembly was Jan 5, 71.

O.k.,I was questioning the third "1" since I always thought it was a letter. I was not sure if "I" was included in the date casting or not either. Thanks for clearing that up.

Rich,

Canadian built cars had a number instead of a letter to represent the assembly plant.
