Default Hillbilly racing

For some reason I thought yesterday would be a good day to take the Hitman Corvette to the track for some light testing, even though the heat index was projected to well over 100 degrees, and was even able to talk Rob and his oldest son Devin in going with me. Besides the Vette, I loaded the Deuce, as I figured while there I might as well make a couple of hits with it.

The good part, considering the temps, and track conditions, the Deuce could not have done better, running a 6.58, 6.56,.6.54 and a 6.53 in the finals to take home the win in Superpro.

The not so good part, though a easy 7.80 pass, it was good to finally take the Hitman down the track, unfortunately as I doing my burnout for a second pass, the number 4 rod decided to let go. Though it looks like it hurt the block pretty good, it could have been worse had it been doing a run. All part of racing, and except for the engine problem, I was please with how the Vette performed.

And maybe the most interesting part of the whole day, there is an old school '55 Chevy that runs there. Well as he was entering the shutdown area, a deer ran from the infield in front of him, getting (the deer) flipped head over head over heels by the impact.

Just an old 327 that came with the car. One of the prior owners said might have 500 passes on it, so not too big of a surprise when it let go. A refresh was in the plans, so now just doing it sooner then later.

Yep, That's "dropping the hammer and picking up the pieces." Run it hard and carry a big broom, rebuild and go for broke...just another day at the strip.

As I researched the car, appears the car was an old modified eliminator car, where many pre-1968 vettes ran ('70s to early '80s). Seems broken parts were the norm. Running small blocks, 4 or 5 speeds trans, no rev limiters, leaving at 10,000 grand with the wheels in the air, and shifting at ???. Old timers say you could hear the cars a mile away, knew for certain what class it was, and felt this class was one of the most exciting of all the classes. Unfortunately NHRA killed the class in the early '80s.

Yep, one of my favorite videos. What is there not to like about smokey burn outs, dry hops, high rpm launches and shift points?
