Default Hangin' Gears on Halloween!

This is a story Bill wrote years ago for our car club's newsletter and I thought I'd share it with you guys:

One of my most memorable antics as a youth growing up in metro Detroit happened one early October Friday night in 1981. The weather was still clear, though a little cool, so many of us still had our muscle cars out. Cruising north on Gratiot in my white ’69 Judge, my friend and I were being paced by a blue ’71 Barracuda making a lot of noise and running with no hood. Our first instinct was to let this fish go, but as we cruised past 13 Mile, it was obvious these guys weren’t gonna go away. With the normal small talk we decided to head over to Lipke, an isolated side street between Gratiot and Harper, running behind the cemetery.

Knowing the guys had a big block and a stiff gear in the ‘Cuda we schmoozed them into running from a 20 roll. With my Judge in a perfect power band for the RAM AIR mill, we proceded to trounce the ‘Cuda pretty good. We weren’t surprised when the guys immediately asked for a rematch. This time they wanted to go from a dead dig, and the passenger and driver switched before they were ready to roll. As we launched, I feathered the Judge out and then stood on it! The ‘Cuda launched way too hard for the cool October night and all we saw was his headlights in the rear view mirror as he fishtailed wildly and then disappeared.

When we returned, the guys were standing outside the ‘Cuda yelling at each other. All I heard was someone scream “my brother’s gonna kill me!” The driver had last control, run up the curb, mowed a fence over, and flew into the cemetery nose down into a freshly dug hole. We made a hasty exit.

And so, what is the lesson to be learned from this story? Watch out for goblins on cool October nights… and ALWAYS take your foot out of it if you’re heading for a fence!!!

Bill and his friends went back to the scene the next day to check it out.
