Default Finish on 69 Chevelle 4-spd bench shifter bezel

Hi folks, someone painted the shifter bezel on my Chevelle and I want to strip the paint without harming the original finish underneath. Is this just a matte finish chrome, and can I use paint remover without risking marring the original finish?

Thanks.

Mine is a natural, matte finish that I polish when needed. Except for the black inset, I don't think it was painted, and don't think it was chromed.

Will laquer thinner take the paint off?

Thanks guys. I used lacquer thinner to get some of the paint off. The tougher stuff I scraped lightly with a razor blade. I think the original finish was supposed to be a light silver dusting of paint like Charley's pics show. Now mine looks like a semi-shiny chrome so I might hit it with some light silver.

Thanks again for the help.

Charley, what car is that?

I couldn't decide how to restore mine. Finally, I had it re-chromed and then I painted the inset black. The chrome was kind of a matte finish because of the rough surface. Looked really nice.
