Default 69 Hemi Daytona seized by IRS up for auction

A real 1969 426 Hemi, 4-speed Charger Daytona held by the IRS up for sealed bid auction. This should be interesting. I wonder who didn't pay their taxes this year?

Looks like a somewhat well known car but I cant recall who's it is/was. Nice Keystone classics on it.

Thanks to Verne who sent me the link thinking I actually had money to bid on it. Nice joke Verne

That car has long belonged to Phil Jackson, (not of NBA fame). He is(was?) a prominent Mopar muscle car collector with many rare cars including an orange 70 Hemicuda convert. That car(Daytona) is probably one of the best hemi wing cars in terms of provenance and rarity.

I would still like to think a car like that is worth 4-500K in this down market. If there is a mad resurgence in prices for rare musclecars again, expect a car like this to lead the way.

And I am really not much of a fan of wing cars, but I can certainly appreciate the significance of the car.

If you read the fine print in the ad, you are bidding on only the rights the IRS have in it. So if the owner owes $200K in taxes, and the car is worth $400K, you end up only getting a partial ownership interest in the car. That means more lawsuits and a possible extra amount of $$$$$$ to buy out the owner's interest.

I've never really been a follower of the wing'ed cars. Aren't Charger Daytonas much more rare than the Plymouth Superbirds? Anyway, those cars could possibly be considered the highpoint of the American Musclecar. NOTHING else was "louder". If I wanted to define an American Musclecar to a complete stranger to this culture, all I would have to do is show a photo of a Daytona/Superbird! No other words would be required.

Also, the Daytonas were available in any color made by Dodge that year. Just about any one of them could be a 1 of 1 combination. I had a Y2 Yellow HEMI, automatic, Daytona with the black cloth insert interior - a 1 of 1 oddball.

The Superbirds were restricted to a handlful of colors and no other real option choices.
