Santa brought me some money so I am going to replace the bias belted red lines on my 66 GTO with a set of red line radials. Does anyone have suggestions pro or con as to brand or source for buying them. Currently I am running 7:75 x 14's on rally 2 rims. Any suggestions as to size that I should run on the new rally one rims. They are 14x6. The conversion charts show 7:775x14 converting to 205/75 or 215/70 or 235/60. I'm looking for enough tire to fill the wheel well without rubbing and one that gives a good ride, not concerned with wear factors. Any help and or comments would be appreciated.

Don, Go with Diamondback red lines and nothing else! They take modern tires and rework the sidewalls to add the stripe etc. I got the Firestone's for my L79 after numerous recommendations from Corvette buddies...maybe Kenny Pascoe can comment on them. I am getting a set for my project Z also...

We have the Diamondback tires on the 68 yellow car..they are very nice!! expensive though..also have the redline radials from Universal on Karen's 69 Camaro 215/70 x 14..they are a great looking tire, handle well and ride nice..they are from BF goodrich. Either one would do the job..

A friend has some of the new BFG Silvertown redline radials on his '66 Chevelle, nice tire with a Radial T/A style tread. Coker sells them, perhaps others.
Agree with the no-go on Coker house brand redlines. The tread is clunky, the redline color on the last set I saw seemed off, and I've heard many quality control issues. Good to hear about Diamondback. I've liked dealing with them in the past. I wonder if they could make a redline or whiteline tire with an early '67 Wide Oval style stripe, you know, big diameter out towards the tread. I still don't know why that isn't reproduced, since all the '67 literature shows cars with that style of stripe. I like a 215/70/14 on a 6" wheel for midsize cars, to approximate an F70-14 look. 235/60's rarely look right to my eye. 205/70 is a small looking tire, I only use on '65/'66 Mustangs and early Novas, usually with 5" or 5.5" wide rims. I like 225/70/14's (when you can find them) on '68-72 GM A-body cars, especially those with 14x7" rims. |
