exhaust manifold application???

Here is a question that I have gotten mixed answers on.

What were 178/879 manifolds used on, if they were not drilled for smog fittings???

Also I found a #14045176 manifold (J-3-0 date) that looks just like a 178 manifold.

It is amazing what you find when you start ceaning out the corners of your garage.
