3856223 was 65-69 396. According to Colvin's book, 65/66 all 396s and 67-69 all HP A/F body cars.
2 questions: 1. Does "HP" refer only to 375hp cars or would 350hp be included? And 2, was this crank used in the HP Novas? Thanks! Todd. |

The 6223 was used in both the 350hp and 375hp motors...the low horse motors starting in 1969 got the cast crank. My old "How to Hotrod Big Block Chevys" says the L78 crank was also "tufftrided" ...not sure how to tell about that.
And yes, the 6223 was used in all the Nova 396 and 402 applications since the low horse L-35 396 was never available in the Nova. This link takes you to a previous discussion on the subject that should help... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...;Number=183293 wilma

Um.....what is the application for 3863144 and 3874874 in 65-69? Same as 6223?

According to Colvin's book the construction is listed as unverified...but, I found this info online that says they were forged units....with a wide application date range...perhaps they were replacement units [over the counter]?

I guess I'm just going to move past this. Seems every source that comes up on google tells a different story about those two crankshafts. Some say nodular iron, some say forged, Colvin's book says '65-69 for 3144 but other sources say 68-85. I even found at least 3 different journal sizes from various other sources. I found a huge old stash of parts but I'm trying to find out what I'm buying if purchased. Appreciate any assistance!

Well if you want to verify if it is forged, you should be able to just look at it. Got a pic or two?

I'm good to go on forged vs. nod iron, just trying to figure out applications (engine configurations) they went to. I'm guessing, based on what I can find, they were OTC purchased crate configurations.

I have issue with Colvin's, if 69 is latest year of usage stated, as this crank was used in 1970 L78's as well. Don't forget another tell tale of an L78 crank (6223) opposed to the 350hp crank and early low horse 325hp and 366 truck engine is that the tufftrided is also cross-drilled through the main journals.

I have a crank out of a 69 L-34 Nova that is cross drilled. wilma
