I used to look carefully at the six banger Novas when I was fixing smashed cars as front end collisions often drove the back side of the waterpump shaft into cyl. #1 thus killing the engines...the shorter V8's always lived through the accidents no problem!.
Sometimes it'd happen on other cars too but the Novas seemed the worst as relatively minor hits straight on the front often resulted in the problem..
