Re: Original owner picture 67 Yenko/Harrell Camaro
Thanks for the compliment Chris, but, I make no such claim. I do know Jack Douglass very well, and, actually went to the dealership in '69 when the cars were there for sale. I have had many in depth conversations with Jack about what went on at the dealership during the heyday of high performance. I have related most of those facts in the past years, so, I don't see how rehashing it all will be a benefit. Most of what we discuss regarding these cars includes a lot of "I thinks", and, "maybes". I don't think that will ever change. Although I'm not at home, and, don't have my VIN or title search info with me, I do know that my car was in the western & southwestern suburbs of Chicago until it was sent to Wisconsin in, I believe, the late 70s. The first wisconsin title lists the word Yenko in the model box, and, it had Yenko stripes over original paint according to the first Wisconsin owner. Who put them on & when, I don't know. Maybe Bill can remember the name of the guy who supposedly was converting all the old Douglass COPOs to Yenkos in the 80s, and, we can try to find him. With Bill's memory for dates, people's names & cars, that shouldn't be too hard. One thing that seems to be fairly consistent is that stripes or not, the people buying the cars thought they were buying Yenko Camaros. The stripes were an extra cost option [approx. $400] so, some people opted for them, and, some did not. My recollection is that there were both D90 striped, AND, Yenko striped cars available for sale. Take your pick. Just pay 400 more for a car with exactly the same equipment except for different stripes. $400 was a lot of money, so, it stands to reason that not everyone would go for the full Yenko stripe package since it didn't make it any faster. Some guys were into go & some were more into show. Same as today. I think maybe.
