If this is what you are taling about, I dont see anything wrong with it. It could be as simple as the guy telling Joey that himself. Most Elderly black folks i have known will refer to themselves as such instead of black and if telling the story to Joey thats how he described himself theres nothing wrong with it being retold as such.

I don't disagree. However, I've often heard blacks refer
to each other using the "N" work.. You try that and see
where it gets you
