He probably didn't mean anything by it. In some areas of the South Colored or black is still used. I don't know how old Joey is but an 80 yr old may still use a term that a 20 yr old wouldn't. It changes alot, I'm not white, I am caucasion.. What does the "C" in NAACP stand for anyway...... But like someone said, it really didn't contribute to the story much.
