After attending the 1988 daytona 500 I hadn't missed a race for 14 years. When Earnhardt passed in Feb 01 it was difficult to watch, but New Yorkers had Steve Park. When he got whacked in Sept 01 I could finally see the races for what they were with no one to root for.
The personalities are definetly lacking today, NASCAR's cautions of convenience are nonsense and the cookie cutter 1.5 mile tracks are great for my insomnia.
Now I can skip the race and the get 5 min highlight reel.
