The fact that a VIN is on a shipping list confirms that the VIN is a real one. That in and of itself can be a critical piece of evidence. I recall a case several years ago where some guys were selling a rather fishy 1970 hemi roadrunner convertible. When the police ran the VIN through NICB, the only VIN that existed with that exact sequencial number (last 6 digits) turned out to have an N (383) instead of an R (hemi) code in the VIN. That was instant evidence of a VIN fabrication.
