I believe it's really a small turbine jet engine that's output side is directly hooked up to the driven axle or prop or whatever the application may be. .
I'd expect it's only used for short runs and in the case of the Z16 or other vehicles w/ another primary engine source, you'd have to step on the clutch or disengage some way from the driven axle or you'd probably over-rev the primary engine. .
Whether you'd start moving with the primary engine then flash the jet power and disengage the primary or just run the jet alone from the start, I have no idea?
