The gas tank was crushed in more than that. I took it off to replace the sending unit and pushed it back out as much as possible. It has the original markings on the top which also match the heater box so we decided to leave it... as the car is very original... 99% interior and 90% paint. As well as all of the phosphating under the hood etc...
I cleaned the outside of the gas tank and then took some zinc rich primer and rubbed it into the few places of surface rust on the tank... over all it looks pretty good compared to what it looked like before...
