Re: Driver 66,67,68,69, 70 Chevelle/GTO/GS convert
1970 GS 455 Convertible, Auto on the Column, (1 of 1040 auto 455 convertibles)
Originally Brown/brown/black top… now Diplomat Blue/white int/white top
Frame up restored one yr ago, nice job overall, few non-original type bolts but generally very well done. Owner has pictures some pictures from the resto on his computer on request. Slightly under 1000 miles on the restoration. Build Sheet, interior sheet, PHS type document that he ordered, have pics of each.
Numbers matching drivetrain/unverified/ the engine pad stamp was unpainted but faint and I couldn’t verify the numbers.
Engine was rebuilt to stage I specs. Transmission, steering and rear end were all rebuilt. Rear gear is 3.96 according to owner. A/C worked had an original R22 system, blew surprisingly strong cold air.
Replacement carb, electronic ignition(hidden)
Original AM radio, remote mirror, tilt steering/comfort grip type steering wheel, not what was originally on the car. Gauges/dash were exceptionally sharp. Oil pressure guage was pegged high, horn didn’t work. All lights and systems seemed to work. Heavy duty 4 core radiator, started on the first crank after sitting a couple weeks. Original style repo battery comes with the car as well as a few parts, nothing notable.
Fit/Finish was pretty good, some gaps at the front of each door. Hood alignment was especially nice. Supposedly all original sheet metal except on front fender and no bondo anywhere according to owner. Looked to me like one rear quarter had been replaced. Issues: Oil pressure, harsh shift (trans needs adjusted) timing set at 10.5 degrees should be about 9.5 degrees, carb running rich, so needs a little tweaking. Drum brakes, a couple small pieces of chrome were faded or pitted. Couple small paint chips top leading edge behind drivers door and also at the back edge of the window fuzzie on the rear drivers side backseat window. Manual windows. Car was mechanically sound, needed minor adjustments. Power top needed help to raise it in place, he said the pistons, hoses and motor were all replaced, may just be low on fluid? What I could see, hoses and pistons looked new. Exhaust was 40 series flowmaster’s, sounded good. Underside was clean but undercoated. Did notice a small 3-4 mm hole in the frame, both sides abeam the trailing edge of the doors. Interior light cover on lower back seat was broken.
Asking $35,000. I asked him how much he had in it and he wouldn’t tell me. I would imagine he has close to that into it since he had to pay someone to do the car. It has been a couple months since I talked to him but I know he is motivated now because he is having to move.
