Frank is right.
Sometimes you don't need a scope.
When the pad is a perfect untouched example,
you can really tell from 6 feet away.
It's when it is covered by dirt, paint, rust, or has been damaged you really want one.
You really need it mostly when there has been manipulatation of the surface.
You need to look past the anomaly to see the broach marks, or the fraud.
Helps to "read the metal"
Or you can use it to read your neighbors newspaper.
