I thought that the point of the ZL2 hood was to accomadate the higher clearance of the 427 with high rise intake, which is why they were standard on all COPO's.

The L72 motor required no more hood clearance than an L78 equipped Camaro with an SS hood using the standard open element air cleaner.
There was no physical size/clearance differences between an L78, L72 or (to the best of my knowledge) a ZL1 motor, so the ZL2 hood (IMO) would not be installed to solve any clearance issues.
As far as the car being a COPO - it could be possible. You just know there have to be a few more out there hidden away in buildings or surrounded by vegetation.
