"YORK U.S. 30 DRAGWAY, York, Pa., (May 8-10) -- The Sixth Annual Super Stock Nationals was a huge drag racing success by anyone's standards as the Super Stock Magazine-sponsored event pulled the finest field of Pro Stockers ever assembled, one of the largest and quickest fields of Super Stockers, and a stellar field of AA/FC entries for three days of dynamite drag racing competition.

In three days featuring the Enduro Eliminator points system, the crowd of Pennsylvanians and out-of-staters were treated first to an evening of competition by the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Funny Cars and then to two days of points competition for all classes.

At the end of those two days, Candles and Hughes emerged victorious in the funny cars, Sox & Martin held off the comers in Pro Stock, and the Super Stock competitors had to sit back and watch Ohioan Carroll Fink wade through the field twice to win positions in Super Stock with his Zanesville-based Division III SS/DA Plymouth, formerly owned and driven by Ronnie Sox.

The Funny Car final had all the fans on their feet for this great rematch. Both cars burned out short of the marker flags to avoid fouling out, and staged very carefully. At green, both cars were away, and the "Hawaiian" held a slight lead through the lights, going 7.35, 201.34 to Hughes' 7.42, 200.89.

In the Pro Stock final, both cars again staged very lightly to allow for wheelstands and early leaves. At a mere 9.93 seconds later, Sox crossed the line ahead of Strickler's 9.95 and reversed the trend for a popular win".
