Default Re: How he got "Grumpy."

Always thought the Strickler/Jenkins team was a strange mix on the original Old Reliable cars. Strickler would sit in the tow rig and eat, whatever, while Grumpy worked his ass off trying to squeeze more out of those cars each run. Helped them push the 62 Bubble top to the line in a match race against Hayden Profitt (sp?) at Atco. Carbs were all apart, Jenkins sitting on the fender rejetting or whatever as we pushed it up there. Jumped off at the line, slammed the hood, Strickler hit the key, ran a low 11 something, but still lost to the big Mopar. Back to the pits, Jenkins dove back under the hood, Strickler back to the hot dogs or whatever without saying a word.

Hayden Profitt, match race that day, on the other hand, would drive back into the pits, big cigar in mouth, sit on the hood and B.S. with us kids, and when he saw Jenkins/Strickler at the staging area for the next match race, politely excuse himself, and say "Gotta go to work". Spank them again, come back in the pits and jump back up on the hood, wiggle his eyebrows and back to the BS. Never did see him open that hood all summer.

Maybe that's part of why Jenkins got grumpy, Yes?
