I went through Air Force ROTC at UC Berkeley in 1983-87. We called it "The People's Republic of Berkeley." Our commander, Colonel Jerry Driscoll, was a Vietnam F-105 pilot and had spent over 7 years as a POW in the Hanoi Hilton with men like John McCain. Driscoll rode the BART train in daily from his home and would walk across the UC campus in full USAF dress uniform with seven rows of ribbons. Not one of the so-called 'student radicals' ever made so much as a peep toward Colonel Driscoll--no one dared. After 7 years of torture he wasn't about to take any $hit from some snot-nosed peaceniks.
