The above photo was staged in about 1980, but apparently the following happened in the early 1990s:

The F18 was launched from a catapult at Lakehurst Naval Air station, and Garlits ran his dragster from the concrete pad next to the catapult. The distance from the start of the catapult to what would be the end of the flight deck was used for a start/stop point. The F18 beat Garlits by less than 1/10th of a second due to the dragster being unable to get traction. The next day, Garlits ran the dragster at Englishtown, and beat the F18's time easily.
