Michigan is like that but only on vehicles considered historic, not just any old car. I am not sure, think it has to be 25 yrs or older to qualify as historic vehicle and must not be used for daily transportation, only for parades and special events, e.g. cars shows. Failure to comply will result if the historic plate being canceled.
The plate issue year must match the model year of the car and the plate must not be currently registered on another vehicle. Same price as the historic plate and you must apply for it. Can't walk into DMV and walk out that day register. Need a special form and a photocopy of the compete plate. Should get the sticker in about 2-4 weeks. Good for 5-10 yrs.
I did that with my 1964 Impala. I found a mint plate a lady had hanging in her garage. Plate was last used in 1966.
