The Manhattan Project cost $22 billion in today's money. Over 125,000 people work on the project. 90% of the spend was on creating the materials (Plutonium and Uranium 235) used for the bombs.
Why was is called the Manhattan Project? Some say because a bunch of scientists got together to discuss nuclear fission in a hotel room in NYC. But this is not the truth. The project was named Manhattan because that's the home of Columbia University. This is where much of the theoretical research took place.
