One of eight built by Bill Stroppe for Mercury's assault on A/FX.
A/FX did not require 100 copies to be built like Super Stock did. Plus Mercury did not want to compete with Ford's Thunderbolt. A few of these Comets came with the 427 SOHC engine. Most famous was the one driven by Dyno Don
Each Cyclone received bumpers, fenders, hood, trunk lid and doors made of fiberglass. Plexiglas side windows replaced factory glass, shaving weight from the car's greenhouse. Modifications continued inside, with lightweight bucket seats and a fiberglass filler panel in place of the rear bench. Below the body, the chassis was altered to include custom traction bars, Ford's bulletproof 9-inch rear axle and a pair of racing slicks mounted to Cragar wheels.
